Exampples I found on the Internet

Rough Sketch
This is one of my first sketches thumbnail sketches. It's suppose to have the main Magazine name at the top and the main cover line underneath the The name of the Magazine. The line in the middle is suppose to represent the border between the sky and the ocean/beach. Since my art skills aren't too good, I think it

This is a rough draft of what  my cover would be like,  I decided to change one of the texts to the right since I don't thin that it would be as visible if it was placed on the bottom left. In the original sketch, there was suppose to be some objects in the water, like people and boats scattered around, although I didn't include it in the rough sketch, since my artistic skills are limited.

I added a white border and began to try working on it on photoshop
This batch is my very first attempt at designing the front cover of my magazine I decided to start off with a white border, but then realized it didn't look too good. So then I tried using tan as my friend suggested, but i also didn't think it looked good. Eventually I landed on green from some magazine cover's I saw on the internet which looked somewhat decent.
Eventually i developed on this and began to add the coverlines. I used an extreme long shot, to show the scenery of the beach as well as the boats, this makes the viewer able to see Bali's scenery. I've attempted to capture the Bali's beach, since it's most known for having nice looking beaches. I thought the coverline needed to be readable so I made it a vibrant colour so that you can easily see it in front of the background. I then added a dark "Bali" text and put it behind the boats on the beach, from this point I just needed to complete my coverlines, but i still feel unsatisfied.

Those are a handful of typefaces and fonts that I found fitting for my front cover. I Decided to mix the 1st and 2nd typeface as my Masthead. For the front cover, I used the 2nd typeface for buzzwords and decided that the 4th typeface would fit as a subheading for my article, and the 5th would be for my article text. I didn't use the 3rd example as I feel like it wouldn't fit with the sleek look that I have for my magazine I chose these typefaces since they are more simplistic fit the convention of typefaces in travel magazines being more simple and less flashy. this also makes the viewer of the magazine to focus more on the scenery instead of the text, since it's kept simple.

After feedback from my associates, they mentioned that the colours didn't work well, I agreed with them and decided to redo my front cover, now with more knowledge and trying out one of the example as inspiration. The colour white is a safe colour to use since, it compliments most things. The white colour also keeps the cover feel more modern, since less vibrant colours are being used in modern projectsI began with making "hopper" a little different from "island" in "Island Hopper" so that it doesn't look too boring. I kept the boats so that it can use blocking to block a small part of the the "BALI" text to make it less boring. I then added the thin square border to shape the margins inside the box. I then added a white "BALI" text behind boats and added the coverlines. Eventually I thought that there wasn't enough space so I enlarge the box giving it more space. I then finally added a small shadow on my coverline so that it's readable, as well as added the barcode and altering the recoloring the image to look more appealing.

My teacher recommended that I add a price somewhere on the cover. So I decided to place it near the bar code since it looked like an available spot to put the price.

Contents Page Development

This is my contents page development

Reflection is one with my development

Here are some examples

Again I began designing with using one of the examples as a base and working off of that. I used another image of one of Bali's beaches in an extreme long shot and took it form a different angle to keep it different from the front cover. I included some of the boats that were docked near the beach, since it's design is part of  Bali's culture. I then added a banner in white, carrying over the modern simplistic design from the front cover. on the close right side where my contents would be in. Later on, I decided to move it to the right since that feels more comfortable with me. At first, I felt like using black text on a white background looked good, but later on felt like it looked too boring for the page numbers, and felt like it didn't pop out as much. So, I decided to replace the black text with something transparent, revealing slightly more of the image behind the banner, making it standout more from the white banner. I used different typefaces so that the reader can quickly and obviously understand what they're looking at, and make it easier for their eyes to navigate. I also removed a kid that was accidentally included in the image to make it cleaner. Then, I finally added some finishing touches to the image I took to make it more appealing.

My teacher noticed that the texts weren't aligned and the spacings were off as well as recommending a more left aligned text instead of justified, and a website. So I fixed the spacing and added a website on the bottom right. This would be good for the younger audience since they may want more digital ways to view the magazine. I put the website on the bottom right just in case they needed it.

Examples:

Since I started to have some experience, I went straight into designing the double page spread, and took inspiration from one of the examples again. I once again used another extreme long shot, of Bali's beach, but and to subtly include some of the people in the image, to show the viewer that people at the are having a good time in Bali's beach, and may convince them. The image focuses on the small Balinese structure to keep Bali's culture in view and somewhat at the center. I started off using the example as a base and continuing from there. I really liked this example since it focuses on the main image, and has good white space, as well as keeping the modern feel with using grayscale colours, like white. I separated the article better using margin columns since my teacher had recommended it, and it makes it look more neat and organized. I then added the rest of the article on the right side of the page and put a black gradient behind it so that it can easily be read. I also made the image fill up more space so that the is utilized nicely. I used different typefaces to easily differentiate the article, heading and subheading to make it more pleasant for the reader to navigate through the contents page. then added the page numbers as well as a caption under the image with their own unique typefaces. I finally added some finishing touches to the image, like slightly changing the colours.

A drop cap was recommended by my teacher, as well as separating the first paragraph of the article into two so it looks more appealing. He also told me to include the name of who wrote the article. He also thought the text looked a bit too bold, so I decided to change the font to make it look less bold

Double Page Spread

This is my Double Page Spread Research and Development

I originally had created one table for one magazine, but sadly I lost it and it wasn't saved. So I had to chose a different magazine but still related to my project. Didn't feel too difficult creating this as all I needed to do was analyze the double page spread of my magazine.

Before Reading

Magazine:

 How it works

Issue:

Date of Issue/ Issue No.:

Publisher:

 Future Publishing Ltd.

Genre:

Animals, Pets

Images:

2 images, one with a cat and a dog, and another where a cat in interacting with another cat

Layout

The right page has a medium amount of text and the left page has very little text. the page numbers are 20 and 21. The whitespace seems to be used good enough, and it has quite a unique drop cap.

First impressions:

The double page spread has some colours to keep it interesting instead of just blank white space, and the images seem big enough to have good negative space.

After Reading

Heading:

 Cat's vs Dogs

Subheading:

How the psychology and biology of the world
s most popular pets compare

Author:

Scott Dutfield

Article:

it gives a history lesson about the 2 domestic animals, dating back to the prehistoric age and how they evolved until the modern age

Mode of address:

It doesn't address the audience at all

Pull Quote:

No pull quote was used

Audience:

People who are interested in the history of Cats and Dogs, Pet lovers, Paleontologists. The pet lovers are targeted with the wholesome images of cats and a dog with some colour, while paleontologists may be targeted due to the information in the article.

Impression:

I thought the article was pretty fun, it gave some fun facts about the pets that I don't think a lot of people know. Although I definitely won't remember these fun facts

Inspiration:

I like how they used the white space in this magazine, although I think I might replace the orange background colour with a really large image of my own

Before Reading

Magazine:

 Lionmag

Issue:

June - July2022

Publisher:

 Bentang Media Nusantara

Genre:

Travel

Images:

2 images of Bali's iconic destinations, one of GWK and the other of Pura Lempuyangan

Layout

It's pretty heavy on text especially on the bottom. The page numbers are 14-15. The drop cap, although very slightly different looks different, still looks basic. There's an alright amount of negative space.

First impressions:

I don't like how there's so much text, I think a travel magazine should lean more towards the visuals

After Reading

Heading:

 No heading

Subheading:

Garuda Winsu Kencana Cultural Park, and Pura Lempyungan

Author:

No author name was given

Article:

The article gives a history and gives information about GWK and Pura Lempyungan the 2 locations that are on the image.

Mode of address:

It never addresses the reader

Pull Quote:

No Pull quote was given

Audience:

People who are intrigued about Bali especially GWK and Lempyungan, however, the article is typed in bahasa, so I think it aims to people who are still in Indonesia but would like to visit Bali. They're targeted by using the Indonesian language.

Impression:

I think the article was between boring and fun. I found the information and the history that was displayed to be quite intersesting, but in the beginning I thought it would be boring since there was so much text.

Inspiration:

I learned that too much text can be unappealing, and I don't think I would include heavy text on my magazine.
