Multicam editing

In this blog you can find the work I did on how to edit with multiple cameras. My group filmed the footage, but I edited it alone

. My teacher provided a template for the blog post.

What is Multicam Editing?

Multicam editing is the process of editing footage of a single scene or subject recorded from different cameras and angles. Showing the same scene or subject from different angles helps make the video more dynamic and visually captivating for your audience

Shooting

Our subject , a classmate, stood in the centre of the room and did a short performance. My group stood around the subject to record the performance from different angles. You can also see members from other groups because we did this lesson as a class. To make it easier to synchronise our cameras, the teacher clapped at the start of the scene. This allowed us to line up the video in the editing process and ensure that the transitions would be smooth. Without this simple action it would have taken a lot longer to sync the videos.

Here are the raw videos from my group members:

My editing process

  • Upload the videos to the editing software (Capcut)

  • Detach the audio of the clip you wish to use in the final video.

  • Find the ‘clap’ marker on the audio.

  • Line up the video files together.

  • Cut where I want the edit to happen

  • Don’t delete the clip, just lower the opacity. This way it can be used again later.

  • Mute all clips except for the one you want to use.

Here is my final edited video:

Reflection: Since I was using a different fresh laptop I had a troublesome time trying to download the editing software. It was almost too late for me to edit the video since I almost ran out of time, but since the editing was somewhat simple, I was able to get it done quickly and complete the video. Since I was an actor in the scene, I was unable to record for the scene which ended in our group having only 3 raw footage.

Mini Project

Shooting Practice : Music Video

This post contains a mini project that helped us learn how to shoot a music video. We shot our verse as a group and then created this post together.

Lesson Description: My teacher gave each group a verse from THE BEATLE - Here Comes the Sun. We had to plan a scene which included various camera work and edits. The goal was to improve our lip syncing skills, which it later on will be use for our MV project.

PRE PRODUCTION

Before we started our production, our teacher gave the class a popular song to download and perform to so that everyone in class were familiar with the song and are able to perform well in a short amount of time. Our teacher recommended that we actually sing the song instead of lip syncing so that the visuals match up nicely with the song. Our teacher then gave each group our verse and recommended that we did a quick little storyboard for the music video. Afterwards, we were given a short amount of time to record our scene anywhere in the building.

PRODUCTION

We started by recording the scene based of our storyboard in the canteen but disliked the outcome, so we quickly came up with a different and slightly more creative shot to keep it less boring. This scene was for the first half of our verse. We did this scene by using a speaker so that both actors were able to hear the song from far away and are able to act. while the second scene for the other half of the verse was quickly thought up, which ended up making the second scene a lot more simple, and not as creative as  the first one.

POST PRODUCTION

We almost didn't have enough time to record our scenes but thankfully it worked out. After recording our scenes, we quickly went to our classroom and uploaded all our videos to google drive to make it easily downloadable to work on the post production, and editing of the videos so that our lip syncs properly matched up with the song we were pretending to perform to. This was done by using a video editing software to combine both the clips and the songs until it properly matched up.

PROBLEM:

Camera did not focus for a couple of our shots which then we had to retake more shots than we expected.

Bad whether which blows the whole meaning of this music

SOLUTION:NEXT TIME:

Bring proper camera next time

Choose a better time to record our scenes, or wait out the rain

Self Reflection:
Our divided ourselves into sections that we could all work on. Nathan was in charge on the camerawork and audio work, while I was in charge of editing the videos and lining them up, and Haresha and Ata were in charge on the blogpost and the behind the scenes documentation. To me it felt like we did a pretty good job on how creative the first scene was, however we forgot to use our teachers advice of using 2 shots of the same scene so that we could switch between them to make the scene less boring. However, I think the creativity could make up for the missing 2 shots method that our teacher recommended to us. This time, we felt that we were slightly more productive than we usually are since we were able to quickly define our jobs and get to work faster.

Reveals background and context of location

Here's a video explaining a little more about camera angles that our teacher gave us

CAMERA MOVEMENTS

Here's a table my teacher made to help me learn about camera movements

Fixed

Camera remains static

Calm, peace, normal

Push in

Camera moves slowly toward subject

Brins the audience close, more involved, getting more serious.

Pull out

Camera moves slowly away from the subject

Takes the audience away from the action, leaving a character. Detaching from subject.

Pan

Side to side, camera fixed

Reveal information, mirrors natural head movement of the audience.

Tilt

Up and down, camera fixed

Vertical version of Pan.

Doll

Camera moves around freely

More immersive, we are moving inside the subject world, we feel part of the action.

Tracking

Camera Camera follows a subject

Moves with the subject almost like we’re travelling with it.

Crane

Camera on a crane

Reveals the epic size of the settings landscape

Handheld

Camera is shakey

Very natural, immersive. High energy.

Zoom

Zoom

Brings the audience closer to the budget. Draws our attention to something.

MISE-EN-SCENE
Mise-en-scene help create an arrangement of visuals that catch the attention of the audience within a frame or scene

Here's a slide and video my teacher made and provided  help me learn the terminology of mise-en-scene

THEORY OF STARDOM

Dyer states that celebrities are constructed by companies to target a demographic. By representing themselves as 'real people' ,they are able to attract audience and sell products such as films or music.

Reel Persona: An identity by the star that fits the expectations of audiences (through performances, music video, social media)
Real Persona: The real personality of the star (Shown through interviews, documentaries, behind-the-scenes footage)

Celebrities are appealing to audience for 5 reasons:
  1. Love: fascination with the love lives of stars, or because we feel a romantic affiliation with them
  2. Ordinariness: fascination with them doing routine things, living normal lives
  3. Success: fascination with the idea of overnight success, failure before success that appeals to our sense of fair play
  4. Consumption: fascination with huge material wealth brought by media success
  5. Downfall: fascination with the exploitation of their misery
here are my classroom notes about a celebrity that me and my team chose (Andrew Tate) to analyse their reel and real personalities according to the theory

Celebrity:

Andrew Tate

REEL persona:

What image to they project through their work (films, music, social media)

Social media platforms portray Andrew Tate as someone who has a unique sense of masculinity and is said to be an extremely hard worker that eventually achieves success from it through his suffering. Andrew tate typically shows off his success and masculinity through his stories and by displaying expensive products he owns

REAL persona:

Have there been any cracks in this image (examples)

Yes, such as Andrew being wholesome to one of its students / fans after that person made money from his course. Congratulated him in front of all Andrew Tate’s audience on screen. Also

Love:

How is their love life reported on?

Andrew Tate had links with many different famous and young celebrities such as Sofia Guliyeva, Naghel Georgiana Manuela, and Lori Harvey.

Ordinariness:

Do the media try to show them as everyday individuals like you?

No, sometimes even showed his past which he also had an interest in riding motorcycles like I do now.

Success:

What is their success story? How is it told?

Andrew Tate’s success story leans more to the overnight success stereotype. He states that he gained his wealth through his ventures in Hustler’s University, social media, and casino businesses. From there he gained a massive audience, and had his name talked about in conversations, gaining popularity.

Consumption:

Can you find any articles that celebrate their luxurious lifestyles? Or their extreme diets?

Tate tends to show off how much he’s spent on a product (which is mostly extremely expensive) and brags about the excessive amounts of money he has. Tate only spends money on typical rich people products that can be easily flexed such as expensive watches, sports cars

Dream turned sour:

Has this celebrity had a downfall? How is it reported? Did they recover?

Yes, at some point he was reportedly abusing two women he met on the internet which then the police department took all of his luxury vehicles and barged into his and his brother’s (Tristan Tate) home. However, it was found that both of those women actually falsely accused Andrew Tate for human trafficking but Andrew Tate couldn’t bring back his luxury cars home. Few months later he recovered his popularity after the allegation was over and went famous

Self Reflection:
I had quite a hassle trying to include what we learned from our technical elements because I wasn't able to find the original blogpost containing the slides used to teach us on that day. So I relied on one of my friend's blogpost to remember what we learned and use it as a rough guideline on what needs to be included them in my blogpost. Overall I think I am satisfied with how I displayed what we've learned in class.
